A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
